An overhaul of the Canada Food Guide is set to be released soon, a highly anticipated makeover that will do away with the rainbow visual many Canadians associate with the dietary guide commonly used in hospitals and daycares.

The documents said the change could help Canadians eat more fibre-rich foods, eat less red meat, and replace foods that contain mostly saturated fat with foods that contain mostly unsaturated fat.

"These are things I see on a regular basis," said Sulz.

Sulz is hoping the B.C. government's new chain-up regulations for big commercial vehicles will make the highway safer. It's now mandatory for truckers to carry chains on the Trans-Canada from October to March between Golden and Kamloops and in several other B.C. mountain passes.

The regulations cover vehicles with a gross weight in excess of 11,794 kilograms (with separate traction requirements for vehicles under that weight). The new regs show exactly which tires need to be chained up when the roads turn treacherous and a mandatory chain-up requirement is put in place.

The stricter rules require truckers to chain up as many as six tires if the rig includes two trailers — up from just one tire requiring chains.

Counselling for trauma
The carnage has taken a personal toll on Sulz.

"To say that some of us out there, [that] our lives have been changed because of poor road conditions or inexperienced driving, I'd say, yeah, it's very, very prominent," said Sulz.

A couple of years ago, Sulz and some emergency workers recovered victims from a car that was lodged underneath a commercial transport truck near Rogers Pass a, few days before Christmas.

More traffic, more collisions
The head of the local RCMP detachment says there are several reasons more crashes are happening — more traffic and tired, inattentive drivers.

"One should be prepared to drive in deep snow, heavy rain with hydroplaning, conditions were chaining up is a good thing."

"The statistics are showing that trucks are falling off the road, they're going off the road, they're spinning out. They needed some direction. Although chain-up legislation existed, this is a little more stringent."

There were 13 commercial drivers killed in motor vehicle incidents in B.C. in 2017, the highest number in at least 10 years. A passenger in one of those rigs was also killed.

A whole host of federal tax changes come into effect in the new year. Some will hit your paycheque, others your bills — and if you're a small business owner, there are a couple of changes coming for which you've likely been preparing for months.

The increases are going to pay for what eventually will be an enhanced CPP. The Quebec Pension Plan will see similar changes.

Experts say more than half of Canadians who live in poverty are working.

Small business tax changes
One of the big news stories of the past year and half has been the changes the federal government is making to small business taxes. The most controversial change affects the rules on how much passive income an incorporated small business can hold.

But starting in January, if those businesses hold in excess of the new limit on passive income, some of that first half-million in earnings will be subjected to the much higher corporate rate, depending on how far over the new limit they are.

Possibly the most politically charged tax change coming in 2019 is Ottawa's new carbon pricing system.
