Canada’s new impaired driving laws are now in effect — here’s what to know

Canada’s new impaired driving laws kick in Tuesday, giving law enforcement new powers when it comes to interacting with drivers.

Alcohol-related impaired driving laws will be updated in the Criminal Code of Canada as of Dec. 18, in order to become comparable with drug-impaired driving laws that were reformed earlier this year.

Changes to both drug and alcohol-impaired driving come as part of the former Bill C-46, which aims to make Canada’s laws “amongst the strongest in the world.”

Mandatory alcohol screening
The new laws will give police officers the authority to demand breathalyzer tests from any driver they pull over. Previously, officers could only test drivers if they had a reasonable suspicion the person was impaired. Any driver who refuses to take the test can be charged.

No more ‘bolus drinking defence’

Before Dec. 18, drivers could use the “bolus drinking defence,” arguing that they consumed alcohol just before driving and it was not absorbed yet.

The new law eliminates this defence, by making it illegal to be at or over the alcohol limit within two hours of being behind the wheel.

The new law also bumps up the maximum penalties for many alcohol-impaired driving offences.

Criticism of new laws
While the new laws have been welcomed by Mothers Against Drunk Driving Canada, several groups have raised concerns.

Toronto-based lawyer Michael Engel, who often defends those charged with impaired driving, said the new rules are a big change that raise concerns about baseless searches.

Amazon announces 2nd fulfillment centre in Alberta, this one outside Edmonton

Amazon announced Monday it will open a new customer fulfillment centre in Leduc County which the company says will create more than 600 full-time jobs.

This will be Amazon’s second fulfillment facility in Alberta. The first is in Rocky View County and employs about 1,500 full-time associates. The Leduc centre will be Amazon’s 11th in Canada.

1월 우표 가격 인상 예고 - Canada Post

캐나다 우체국인 Canada Post에서 우표 가격 인상을 예고 했는데요.
그렇지 않아도 비싼 택배 가격까지 덩달아 오르는게 아닌지....

캐나다 포스트에 따르면 1월 중순 우표 가격이 인상될 것이라고 한다.

               

OTTAWA – Unless you really hurry, sending a letter to Santa for next Christmas will cost you a nickel more.

오타와 - 당신이 서두르지 않는다면 다음 크리스마스에 산타 편지를 보내는데에 5센트를 더 써야할 것이다.
(캐나다의 동전을 말할때 1 cent를 penny, 5 cents는 nickel, 10 cents는 dime, 25 cents는 quarter, 1 dollar는 loonie, 2 dollar를 toonie 라고 부릅니다.)

Starting Jan. 14, Canada Post says the cost for an individual stamp on a letter sent within Canada will be $1.05, instead of a loonie. Other increases for mail within the country range between a dime and 35 cents depending on the size of the letter.

The new rates are the first increase since March 2014.

New European research has found that eating spinach uncooked in the form of a smoothie or juice is the best way to obtain the antioxidant lutein, especially when healthy fats are added to aid absorption.

새로운 유럽의 연구는 시금치를 조리되지 않은 스무디나 주스의 형태로 먹는 것이, 흡수를 돕기 위해 건강한 지방이 첨가될 때 항산화 루테인을 얻는 가장 좋은 방법이라는 것을 발견했다.

Carried out by researchers at Linköping University, Sweden, the new study looked at different ways of preparing spinach to maximize the amount of lutein available after cooking.

스웨덴 링코핑 대학의 연구원들이 수행한 이 새로운 연구는 요리 후 이용 가능한 루테인의 양을 최대화하기 위해 시금치를 조리하는 다양한 방법들을 연구했다.

Lutein is a natural fat-soluble pigment found in plants. Dark green vegetables contain particularly high levels. However, like many other nutrients, levels of lutein are decreased by cooking.

The researchers chose to study spinach as it contains comparatively high levels of lutein, and is one of the more popular dark green vegetables. To replicate how it is prepared in the home, the team purchased baby spinach at a supermarket and fried, steamed or boiled it for up to 90 minutes, measuring the lutein content at different times.

The findings, published in the journal Food Chemistry, showed that heating times and cooking methods are both important for retaining lutein.

The longer spinach is boiled, the less lutein it retains, and when spinach is fried at high temperature, a large amount of lutein is lost after only two minutes.

"What is unique about this study is that we have used preparation methods that are often used when cooking food at home, and we have compared several temperatures and heating times. We have also investigated methods of preparation in which the spinach is eaten cold, such as in salads and smoothies," said study author Lena Jonasson.

The team also looked at the effect of reheating spinach in a microwave as part of a packed lunch, a common practice. They found that microwave heating appeared to partly compensate for the previous cooking method, with more lutein released from the spinach and made available for the body as the plant structure is broken down further by the microwave.

However, the researchers concluded that it's best to eat spinach uncooked.

"Best is not to heat the spinach at all. And even better is to make a smoothie and add fat from dairy products, such as cream, milk or yoghurt. In an earlier study, the team found that lutein can reduce inflammation in immune cells from patients with coronary artery disease. Low-grade chronic inflammation is linked to an increased risk of heart attack.

The Public Health Agency of Canada says it’s probably safe to eat romaine lettuce again.

캐나다공중보건국(Public Health Agency)은 로메인 상추를 다시 안전하게 먹을 수 있다고 합니다. (probably 라는 단어 ㅠㅠ 먹으라는 건지 말라는 건지 ㅠㅠ) 

The agency says no new cases of E. coli connected to romaine have been detected in Canada since mid-November.

보건국은 11월 중순 이후 캐나다에서 로메인에 관련된 새로운 대장균의 사례가 발견되지 않았다고 전했다.

In the month before that, 29 people are known to have gotten sick from the bacteria in the lettuce, mostly in Quebec.

그 1달 전에 29명이 상추로 인해 박테리아에 걸렸는데 대부분 퀘벡에서 였다.

“The Canadian outbreak appears to be over as there have been no illnesses in Canada since mid-November,” said an update posted to the Public Health Agency of Canada website on Dec. 24.

Investigators still don’t know exactly how the lettuce became contaminated but the agency says people got sick eating it at home and at restaurants.
